Giacomo Brufani, born in Assisi, was of modest origins, but since he was a young
boy he showed a particular interest in tourists.
He began as an "assistant" to tourists visiting Umbria in stagecoaches, looking
after the horses, and, when needed, explaining the attractions of the Umbria towns.
In 1884 he decided to open a hotel, which immediately became the home away from
home for aristocrat families coming from all over Europe.
Guests in modern times include Prince Albert of Monaco and the Queen Mother of
England.
